Gracias por la información, Roberto, la clave está entonces en configurar
Outlook Express  
como si los servidores SMTP y POP3 fuesen el servidor Wingate. Y configurar
Wingate 
para que mapee los puertos con el servidor original. Es decir, que todas las
comunicaciones 
que recibe Wingate a los puertos 25 y 110 las debe reenviar a los servidores
reales. 
 
Por las indicaciones entiendo que el servidor SMTP real se especifica en Wingate
y  
el servidor POP3 se indica en Outlook Express dentro del usuario (podría haber
varias 
cuentas, cada una con un usuario y servidor POP3).

Configuring MS Outlook Express through WinGate 
 
* The instructions below, are for connecting through WinGate's manual proxy
settings. If you are running WinGate 3.x or later, with the WinGate Internet
Client (WGIC) installed on your workstations, or have installed ENS with WinGate,
configure your applications per your ISP's instructions. In most cases, this will
be to simply leave the applications configured per default installation. 
The Mail applications described in this section require a mapped link to your
mail-forwarding (SMTP) server and a POP3 proxy. The standard port number for POP
connections is 110 and for SMTP, 25. The WinGate set up program will create a
mapped link on port 25 if a SMTP server is specified and a POP3 proxy on port 110
if enabled. 
Microsoft Outlook Express 
WinGate Requires: 
POP3 proxy server, default port 110 
SMTP mapping default port 25, default mapping to ISP's SMTP server on port 25 
DNS server, default port 53. 
In Outlook Express click on the Tools menu 
Click on Account 
Click on the Mail tab 
Click on Add 
Click on Mail 
Enter a Display Name 
Click on Next 
Enter your return e-mail address 
Click on Next 
Click on POP3 mail server 
In the Incoming and Outgoing mail servers enter the name or IP address of the
WinGate machine 
In the Pop Account Name field, enter your POP3 account including your username
in this manner: user#mailhost.domain For example: bob#anywhere.com 
Enter the password for that account 
Click on Next 
Enter a Friendly Name 
Click Next 
Click Connect using my LAN 
Click Next 
Click Finish
